"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit Kolkata on August 22, with strong indications that the much-awaited Sealdah–Esplanade metro route could be inaugurated during his trip. This stretch is part of the East–West Metro project, which has faced significant delays due to construction challenges.
Fueling these expectations, Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar arrived in Kolkata on Tuesday morning and inspected the Esplanade Metro Station and Sealdah underground section. His visit focused on assessing the current condition of the route, including passenger safety measures, signaling systems, and emergency exit facilities.
The Sealdah–Esplanade metro link had faced uncertainty after the Bow Bazar accident during its construction, which had put the project on hold. With the Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation Limited (KMRCL) now completing the work, hopes for the route’s opening have been revived.
According to metro sources, the inspection is a crucial step before final approval, raising anticipation that PM Modi’s visit could mark the official launch of the new service.
